Remedies for Dry Hair

Hydration Nation

During stretches of dry weather, no matter the season, it is important to remember one simple rule: hydrate!

Its important to apply serums and moisturizers when you're fresh from your shower, before the water has time to dry on your skin. Doing this allows for better penetration of products which in turn means softer more supple skin. This also allows for you to get the most out of your products, saving you the cost of wasting money on products that are not absorbing.

If you suffer from dry skin during low humidity months, keep in mind your scalp is suffering too. During stretches of dry weather try to shampoo your hair less. When you do shampoo your hair, use cooler water so that the pores on your scalp don't open too much and dry out. If you can, use seasonal shampoo and conditioner. My favorite seasonal product for dry seasons is the Pureolgy Hydrate series. This selection of products from Pureolgy will add moisture to your hair without weighing it down. It has been reported that this series works very well for up to 98% of clients.

Hydration Product Cocktails

If your hair is extra dry, brittle or has tons of flyaways, you may need to couple your regular conditioner with a heavier one such as a mask or treatment. There are of course tons of them out there, but during this time of year my favorites are Pureology Superfood, Amika Triple Rx, Redken Mega Masks, and Redken Heat Cure.

Just as freshly washed, damp skin is better for product absorption, the perfect time to add de-tanglers, leave-in sprays and serums to your hair is right after its been washed; at this time, the cuticle on the hair is open. My all-time favorite is Pureology Color Fanatic Multi-benefit Leave-in Treatment. This is a multitasking, leave-in spray that detangles as well as protects against heat, humidity and environmental damage. It also acts as a light weight but effective leave-in treatment. Using this spray while your hair is still wet will help fill the cuticle before it closes, adding moisture, softness and manageability to the hair.

Stay Cool, Man

During dry weather, you'll want to avoid heat whenever possible. Try a heatless way to style your hair. In a future blog post I will cover "5 Heatless Ways to Style Your Hair", stay tuned! To heatlessly style your hair, once your hair is dry you can try adding Redken Diamond Oil or Argon Oil for extra moisture and manageability. Ditch the dry shampoo and use dry conditioner, focusing on your dry middle-to-ends to refresh your hair between shampoos; I recommend Amika Silken Up dry conditioner.

And last but not least, if you're still seeing flyaways from static electricity, try the Redken Frizz Dismiss line. Redken also carries flyaway fix sheets that work amazing!

I hope everyone stays safe during this year's hot and dry fire season! Be sure to drink your water and follow these tips to help combat dry season hair.
